American education is currently in “the era of entrepreneurship.” Education entrepreneurs -- both organizations and individuals -- share an underlying assumption that schools are failing and need to be rescued. Education entrepreneurs attempt to alter the educational status quo from the outside. Historical factors over the past half century have created a perfect storm for the educational entrepreneur: an urgent focus on school reform; an acceptance of business and market principles in the public sphere; relaxed educational laws to encourage entrepreneurial participation; an increased pool of money caused by years of strong economic growth; and a technological boom that has opened the door for quick and flexible reforms.
